If you are new to defensive pistol shooting, you will need some basic equipment to get started. Primary Handgun Any off-the-shelf semi-auto pistol or revolver suitable for concealed carry will work for Utah Polite Society events. We strongly suggest you use the gun you carry as your primary self-defense gun. Although you may shoot just about any handgun you care to bring at our events, you may be best served by using a primary sidearm that falls within the following suggested guidelines:
- Semi-auto pistols of at least 9mm, with barrels no longer than five inches.
- Revolvers of at least .38 Special with a barrel no longer than four inches.
- Guns with unported barrels. (some of our shooting is done from close-in retention stances where the gun is held tight to the ribcage. In these instances, ported barrels may become somewhat uncomfortable to shoot.)
- Although you may bring them, we discurage race guns, or guns with optical sights. (You will be best served by guns that are practical for everyday carry.)
Secondary Handgun (optional) Any off-the-shelf, compact or subcompact handgun that is appropriate for use as a backup to a primary handgun. Magazines/Speedloaders/Moonclips We do not impose artificial limitations magazine capacity limitations. However, we would like you to bring the magazines, speedloaders, and/or moonclips you use for concealed carry. Although you can get by with two, we suggest you bring a minimum of three magazines, speed loaders or moon clips. Holster Any holster suitable for concealed carry that allows compliance with the four laws of gun safety will work. However we have found it.s difficult, if not impossible to use cross-draw, shoulder, Smart-carry, fanny-pack, and some of the inexpensive inside the waistband holsters without muzzle sweeping yourself or other folks on the firing line. We recommend a strong side (right side if you are right handed, left side if you are left handed) holster that's worn on the belt, worn inside the waistband, or utilizes a paddle to attach to your waistband. We recommend you use a holster without a retention strap. We've found that holsters that provide a snug friction fit for your gun tend to be less problematic, and allow safer re-holstering of the firearm. Magazine/Speedloader/Moonclip Pouches We recommend pouches that use a snug friction fit, rather than a retention snap. Magazine pouches are typically worn on the weak side (left side if you are right handed, right side if you are left handed), and speedloader/moonclip pouches may be worn on either side, as dictated by your reloading technique. If you don't have pouches, you can use your pants pocket to hold spare magazines/speedloaders/moonclips. Ammunition Typically, we will shoot between 50 and 100 rounds in a Utah Polite Society event. However, we suggest you bring at least 100 rounds. We suggest you shoot full-power practice ammunition in order to simulate the recoil levels of defensive loads, but at a lower cost. Eye Protection Eye protection (generally in the form of safety glasses, prescription glasses, or sun glasses) is required for all shooters and bystanders on the range. Ear Protection Ear protection (in the form of earmuffs or earplugs) is required for all shooters and bystanders on the range. Snacks/Drinks Please bring whatever snacks and drinks you may need while at the range. |
